Forty-five-year-old Felicia Fulbright was half the size of her sister, but she had the same commanding, imperious air about her. Her chin-length hair was the same bleached, platinum blond, but somehow it looked more natural than it had on Fiona.

“You’re the detective?” Felicia asked, before sitting down.

“I’m the sheriff’s deputy,” Jo explained. “I’m assigned to investigate your sister’s death.”

Felicia’s face was flushed and her brown eyes were glued to Jo. “Why not a detective? Shouldn’t there be a detective involved?”

“The sheriff’s office is capable and experienced,” Jo used a reassuring tone. “I worked in Boston for years on many similar cases.”

“Similar?” Felicia huffed out a breath like she’d been running for miles. “No one was similar to my sister.”

“I only meant that I’ve handled many murder investigations.”

Heather picked up on Felicia’s gestures and mannerisms being very much like Fiona’s. They both had a sort of breathless urgency about them and seemed to share excitable, high-strung, and almost neurotic personalities.

Sara returned to the room carrying a tray with coffee, cream, sugar, and a plate of cookies. “I thought you might need some refreshments. Let me know if you need anything else,” she said before leaving.

After handing Felicia a cup of coffee, Heather asked, “Where are you from? Do you live in the Boston area?”

“Oh, gosh, no.” Felicia sipped her coffee, closed her eyes, and sighed. “Ah, that tastes good. I needed it. I live in Newburyport around the block from my sister.” The woman caught herself and blinked back a few tears. “Well, where Fiona used to live. Oh, my.” She sadly shook her head.

“You and your sister were close?” Jo asked.

Felicia put her hand over her heart. “Yes, Fiona was my best friend. We saw each other every day. I just can’t believe what happened. Who would do this to my sister? Why? She didn’t do anything bad to anyone.”

“Avis Morrey told me Fiona had a sister,” Jo said. “I tried to reach you by phone, but you never answered.”

“I don’t generally answer my phone when I don’t recognize the caller,” Felicia sniffed and dabbed at her eyes with a tissue.

“I left messages,” Jo told her. “Did you get them? Maybe I had the wrong number.”

“Avis called me and told me what happened. I did get your messages, but I wasn’t ready to face the truth. I decided this afternoon that I had to pull myself together and come up here.”

“I see,” Jo said.

Heather could tell by her sister’s voice that Jo really didn’t see at all and didn’t understand how someone could disregard calls from law enforcement when one of your relatives had been murdered.

“I’m here now.” Felicia let out another heavy sigh and lifted her cup to her lips.

“Have you been in contact with Avis since Fiona’s passing?”

Felicia waved her hand around in the air. “Just the one phone call. Avis and I don’t get along very well.”

“Why don’t you get along with Avis?” Jo inquired.

“Sometimes I don’t think he has my sister’s best interests at heart. He accuses me of the same thing.
